Improving Motivation & Discipline
Hey guys, John here, we are going to talk about something that is super important right now. If you can master this, the odds of your success will multiply tenfold. This is really one of the things that I've seen people struggle with more than anything over the past few years. Succeeding isn’t about whether you learn fast or slow or being the smartest, it’s not about being the hardest worker and it’s not even about being the most dedicated. But it is about this one thing and that is self discipline - the ability to get things done and to do things right away. Not procrastinating is really one of the hardest things. I was actually going to put off writing this blog till tomorrow cause I really wanted to play some video games tonight, crazy right?!?! Imagine that, I am 50 years old and I was going to put off my work so I can play a silly video game. Anyways, let’s get into it!
Why is it so hard to stay disciplined?
One of the biggest reasons that it’s so hard to stay disciplined is that we have been trained to chase instant gratification. We want those dopamine hits, and we want them now. Almost everyone reading this blog probably needs a dopamine detoxification. You have to rewire your brain so you cat start getting your dopamine from productive stuff like working out, reaching goals, not just from junk food or video games. It’s so hard to do that though now a days when you have video games, social media, streaming platforms and so many other distractions. But you have to, and I mean HAVE to, get disciplined. Self-discipline is the single biggest key because if you can get disciplined and you can execute, you're going to get a lot of things done.
What is Self-Discipline?
Self-discipline is doing things today that will affect tomorrow.
As a pervious gym owner my favorite example is, of course fitness, right? So, let's look at somebody who needs to lose 70lbs of fat. What they do today has no effect on tomorrow or the next day or even next week. If they need to lose 70 or 80lbs what they do today, has no effect, maybe even until next month. That's very, very hard to do right? It's very hard to do the right thing, every single solitary day, knowing that your outcome is months or years away even.
So, you may be thinking, well what am I supposed to do? How do I start getting disciplined? Well, I have four simple steps:
Set A Goal:
You must set a goal, but that goal needs to be ultra specific. The goal must be so ultra specific that you can feel it, you can breathe it, and you can desire it. I want that goal so embedded in you that all you do is think about it, dream about it and imagine it. For example, your goal can be making $500,000 within six months. That is specific, you know when you want it by and what the goal is.
The reason you want your goal to be specific is because you’ll start thinking of the ways to get it. Again, if your goal is to make $500,000 in six months. You will see your behaviors and your patterns changing. Your mind and your subconscious will change. They will change to align with this goal that you have set.
Whatever your goal is be sure that it is specific, it can’t be watered down or fuzzy. You have to be able to feel it, imagine it, dream it and desire it. Now that you have set your goal, let’s move on to the next step which is creating good habits.
Create good habits:
One of the biggest keys to being self-disciplined is creating good habits. You cannot master self discipline, get things done and be a master executor without having some really good habits. I personally think that there are two super good habits that you must build up in order to succeed and they are time-management and exercise.
Mastering your time is so important to your success. Don’t we all wonder where the time has gone? You know you’re working during the day and all of a sudden, it’s nighttime and you’re not even sure what you actually got done. There are only 24 hours in a day, you have to make sure that you are using them wisely.
I know a lot of people will tell you have to get up before everyone else at like 4AM but I am a big believer in getting 6-8 hours of sleep so you can function. You just must find what works for you. Maybe you are someone who can get up super early at 4 or 5 or maybe you are someone that can only wake up at 8. Whatever the time is that you get up or go to sleep just make sure that you use your waking hours wisely.
Now moving on to your health. You cannot be a high functioning individual if you eat junk food and don’t move at all during the day. You need to exercise and eat nourishing food. The food that you choose to put in your body heavily affects your brain. For example, processed sugars make you so foggy so you really can’t sit there and eat chocolate and drink soda and expect to function at 100%.
Now that we have covered some good habits to develop, I must tell you that changing your habits will take some time. You need to change just one thing each day. Maybe one day you eat only one piece of chocolate instead of two, then you eat no chocolate the next day, then maybe after that you start going for a short walk. If you change just one thing each day, then you will have changed 30 things in a month.
Just remember, your habits are important. You cannot succeed and get things done if you have bad habits. Alright, I think we’ve talked enough about that, let move on to the next thing: Planning.
Planning:
Planning is crucial to developing your self discipline. You must know where you are going so you can actually change you actions to get you to that destination. Think about it, if you got in a car and you had no idea how to get to the destination, regardless of how much you drive you’re probably not going to get to the destination, or, it will take you a really long time and lots of mistakes.
For example, if your goal is to make $500,000 in six months, how are you going to get to that? You have to create a road map to get to that point. Creating a plan will help you see what problems you may encounter as well as what you have to adjust in your life in order to reach your goal. Your plan will not always work out how you want it to, but it’s important to have it so you can at least have a starting point.
This step is pretty straight forward but it’s soooo important. Make sure that the plan you create is detailed and supports your goals. Try to think of everything that may come up and add that into your plan. The plan is what will help you ensure that your actions and habits align with your goal. Alright, you’re only one step away from mastering self-discipline, let’s go!!
Visualization:
The last step to mastering self-discipline is visualizing your journey. You must visualize the entire process, all the good and all the bad. You have to see what you will do every day to get to where you want to be. You need to visualize having that $500,000 in the bank, feel how it would feel to have it.
Visualization will help you with a few things. I think the most important thing is that you will be able to see where roadblocks may arise. This will make you less demotivated when those things actually do happen. You can also try to think of a way to abovide them or deal with the in advance.
I think the second most important thing that visualization helps with is desire. If you think about and see your goal and journey every day, you will be motivated to do everything you can to make it happen. You must train your subconscious to want this goal and to do everything it can do to reach that goal.
So, visualization is a great tool, but don’t just visualize, make sure that you take actions as well and follow the other 3 steps.
There you have it guys, that is how you can master self-discipline which, as you may remember, is the key to your success. You must take all 4 steps, implementing them all in your life will help you master discipline so you can execute and achieve your goals.
