Hey guys, welcome back to the blog! Today I am going to talk to you about the 10 keys to success. Yes, you read that right, there are only 10 keys. There is this big misconception that to be successful you must be the smartest, the hardest working, or the most talented, but that’s not true at all. The real thing that determines your success is your attitude. These 10 keys were developed by my mentor and partner Ron Hemmelgarn. Now, Ron grew up super poor, but with these keys he was able to start a massive chain of fitness clubs that he later sold for $200 million. He is definitely someone that you want to listen to. so, let’s jump in and talk about the 10 keys to success:
Be Honest
You might be thinking, “hmm how does honesty affect my success?” Well, there are a couple of things. The first thing is no one likes a liar. People don’t like working with people who lie. They like honesty and so it is important to be honest with others. Be transparent and don’t deceive people.
You also want to be honest with yourself. A lot of people lie to themselves. They lie about how hard they work or how positive they are. The mirror does not lie, you can go look in the mirror and ask yourself “Am I doing the best that I can?” The mirror will not lie. If you can’t be honest with yourself, you will never improve, and you cannot become successful at anything.
Know your Talents!
I have met so many people over the years that don’t understand how good they are. They don’t understand how talented and capable they are. and they fail to see their own potential. I don't know why that is, but it is unfortunate. Not knowing their talents and their capabilities makes them stop their own success. It’s very important to believe in yourself. Whoever you are that is reading this, I know for a fact that there are some things that you are amazing at. So please find that stuff and believe in yourself and your abilities.
Live with Enthusiasm
Success is all about having a positive attitude. Most people are so negative, and they really don’t have a reason to be. You should be excited about your future and your ability to succeed. Every day should be seen as a new opportunity to achieve more and enjoy life. Try to see the joy in everything, I know it sounds crazy. But how often do you stop and appreciate how beautiful the world is? When was the last time you stopped to look at a beautiful sunset, or just sat there and enjoyed nature?
It really does not matter what you do, but you need to do it with enthusiasm. There is this awesome thing that you can’t feel two emotions at once. So why not let the emotion be positive instead of negative. It will make your life a lot easier.
Be Disciplined and Determined
I love using weight loss for my examples because I think it’s a direct correlation to success. Losing weight or being disciplined enough to achieve your fitness goals, whatever they may be, is a success in its own way.
So, to be successful in anything you must be disciplined and determined. You have to set goals and be focused on them. You must maintain the good habits and stay committed to ditching bad ones. Discipline and determination are very important if you want to achieve your goals.
One of my favorite books “Think and Grow Rich” By Napoleon Hill covers this and I would suggest that you read this book if you have not done so yet. If you have read it, then reread it because you can always learn new stuff from it.
Look Eye to Eye – Never Look Down
Every single person that you deal with can teach you something. When you understand this, you will get much closer to your goals of success.
You may ask me “Well what can I learn from someone who is living on the streets?” Easy, they have good survival skills that you wouldn’t know anything about if you have not been in their situation. So regardless of who you are dealing with, try to learn from them, be a sponge. Continuously learning is the only way to get better.
This also means to make eye contact when talking to people. Don’t look down. Looking eye to eye gives off confidence but it also shows respect for the person you are speaking with. So always look at people eye to eye and never look down.
Don’t Worry about Problems – Solve Them
One of the biggest issues I have with my students is how negative and discouraged they get when problems arise. Problems will always occur, that’s just life. In fact, the more successful you become the more problems you are going to face. I used to say that my job when I owned the fitness clubs was a firefighter. All I did was solve problems that others couldn’t. So, stop worrying about the problems, just solve them.
So many people get stuck on the hurdles and can’t get out of their own heads. But for every problem you have there is always a solution. Sometimes the solution is better than where you were before the problem happened.
Assume Your Full Share of Responsibility
After dealing with thousands of staff over the years, I have heard so many excuses. I could write a book with the number of excuses that I have heard. It’s so important to take responsibility because that’s how you grow and how you learn. It’s how you make sure not to repeat your mistakes so you can become better and more successful. You will never be successful or a good leader if you can’t take responsibility. You can’t blame other people or circumstances if you ever expect to overcome mistakes and make improvements.
Don’t Cling to The Past
A lot of people can’t get over their failures, regrets, or mistakes. People spend so much time clinging on to stuff that just does not matter. The past doesn’t matter because you can’t do anything about it. The only thing you can do is focus on the present and the future. What you do today, your actions, attitude, and beliefs change your future. Don’t live in the past, let go of it regardless of if it’s good or bad. Move on and keep going.
Don’t Let Your Possessions Possess You
Money and things are not going to make you truly happy. Those are just trophies to your success. What will truly make you happy and fulfilled is your accomplishments.
If you take the money you were going to spend on pointless things and invested in for your future and your family’s future, it will create a positive impact on your life. Instead wasting the money on a toy that you will eventually be bored of.
Now, if you already have lots of money say you’re worth $50million and you buy something for $5,000 then that’s fine. But I mean more when you just start making money and you just spend it all. That just means you are trying to buy your happiness with money, but physical items will never make you happy, not for long anyways.
Pray Consistently and Constantly for Dreams do Come True
I don’t care who you pray to and honestly this isn’t exactly about praying to a god per say. It’s more about truly believing in your success. You have to constantly pray, hope, and dream that your desires come true. You have to believe, hope, and pray with your whole soul for this success. You must truly desire it and believe in it.
Again, it’s not the people who work the hardest, or are the smartest that are the most successful. It’s the people who want it the most. Back when I was on the police force, and I wanted to get on the S.W.A.T team I truly wanted it badly. I did everything to get on the team, I exercised every day after work when my friends and colleagues were going out to get a drink. I thought of it every day when I woke up and every night before I went to sleep. I lived, breathed, and ate that dream. It was the only thing I was focused on. I did make it on the team, and it was an amazing feeling.
So, basically the most important determinant of your success is to want it so badly and that you let it consume you so that you will do everything you can to get it.
Alright guys, so those are the 10 keys to success. We condensed it down into a bullet list so that you can download it. I would suggest that you hang this up somewhere where you can see it every day. Read the keys each day and live them in your daily life. See how your life changes when you do.
